In the square there is the wall where the old men sit and watch the young go by; he is seated in a row with them. Desires are already memories.
Note
After a long ride through wild country the traveller reaches Isidora, the city he dreamed of: spiral staircases encrusted with spiral seashells, perfect telescopes and violins, the stranger torn between two women who always meets a third. With one difference: the dreamed city held him young, and he arrives at Isidora in his old age.
The towers are wound with spiral stairs, and the young climb them up and down without rest. When one of them has climbed enough, they come back to the square, turn grey and take the last seat on the wall; meanwhile another arrives at the gate.
Touch a tower and a youth will hurry up its stairs; touch the wall and the old men will turn their heads to watch. Desire and memory live in the same square, a few steps apart.
