Gods of two species protect the city of Leandra.
Note
In Leandra the Penates follow the families: when a family moves, they go with it into the new house. The Lares, instead, belong to the house, and when the family leaves they stay to receive the newcomers. In the houses they meet and argue; each believes it is the true soul of Leandra, and none is sure.
The Lares speak of the city as it was, the Penates of the city as it could be. In the scene the town lies under two ghost cities that both claim it. In gold line, the Lares’ city: the buildings that stood where each house stands, and the walls of houses long gone. In blue line, the Penates’ city: what each family would build, rising from the roof of the house where it lives. When a family moves its blue city folds away, crosses the town as a few lights and rises again over the new house; the gold stays where it was, waiting.
Touch a lived-in house: its gods argue, and the city before and the city after rise in turn, each taller than the last. Touch an empty house: the nearest family comes to live in it. Who is Leandra, those who stay or those who leave?
