In Beersheba this belief is handed down: that, suspended in the heavens, there exists another Beersheba.
Note
The people of Beersheba believe that above them hangs a celestial Beersheba, all gold and precious stones, and below them an infernal one, made of refuse: peels, shards, rags. They honour the first and fear the second. But they are wrong: the celestial city is the one that, in its moments of self-forgetting, lets things go and fall; the infernal one is the miser’s hoard.
In the scene the city stands in the middle; above it, its golden double, rigid and windowless, which grows heavier by a block each time the city lets something fall; below, a slowly turning cloud of discards.
Touch the city and the two change places: the discards rise and spread across the sky like a glittering constellation, the gold sinks underground and dulls. Touch again to return to what they believe. Touch a discard to see it shine.
