Eutropia is not one, but all these cities together: only one is inhabited at a time, the others are empty, and this process is carried out in rotation.
Note
Tells how Eutropia is not one city but many, every one identical in its plan of streets and houses; only one is inhabited at a time, the rest wait empty. When weariness becomes unbearable, when no one can stand their job, their relatives, their debts any longer, the whole citizenry moves to the next town, ready and almost new: there each one takes up a different job, a different wife, another view from the window.
The scene sets the seven Eutropias side by side on a rolling plateau, all born of the same plan and told apart only by the slope each rests on. One alone glows with saffron windows and chimney smoke; the other six stay shuttered, paler, waiting their turn.
Touch an empty town, and weariness will fall on the inhabited one: a line of tiny travellers will cross the hills carrying the light with them, house by house, until it goes dark on one side and catches on the other. Touch the ground, and only a widening ring will remain, since what stays here is never the city itself, only its plan.
