Cities & the Sky 1

Eudoxia

Tap a house or a motif in the carpet · drag to look around

In Eudoxia, which spreads both upward and down, with winding alleys, steps, dead ends, hovels, a carpet is preserved in which you can observe the city’s true form.

Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, trans. William Weaver (1974)

Note

At first sight nothing resembles Eudoxia less than the carpet’s design: symmetrical motifs repeated along straight and circular lines. But look carefully and each place in the carpet corresponds to a place in the city, and all the things in the city are included in the design, arranged according to their true relationships.

An oracle said that one of the two objects has the form the gods gave the starry sky and the orbits of the worlds; the other is an approximate reflection, like every human creation. Which one?

Here the carpet hangs over the city like a sky. Touch a house and a thread of light will rise to its motif; touch a motif and its house will light up.

Quotations are brief excerpts for the purpose of commentary. The full text is available in published editions. The Cities of Ottavia, Valdrada & the soundtrack are inspired by "Monument Valley" from ustwo games.
