Thin Cities 3

Armilla

Tap a tap, a shower, a tub · drag to turn

It has no walls, no ceilings, no floors: it has nothing that makes it seem a city, except the water pipes that rise vertically where the houses should be and spread out horizontally where the floors should be.

Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, trans. William Weaver (1974)

Note

Of Armilla only what is usually hidden remains: copper, brass, porcelain. The pipes rise where the houses would be and branch where the floors would be; at the top, tubs and basins hang against the sky like late fruit.

The missing floors are only sketched in the air, in dashed lines: a city drawn by its absence. No one knows whether it is unfinished or demolished.

Nymphs and naiads are said to live here. You will not see them, only taps that open and close on their own, a tub filling, a puddle spreading and drying. Touch a tap, and the water will run for you too.

Quotations are brief excerpts for the purpose of commentary. The full text is available in published editions. The Cities of Ottavia, Valdrada & the soundtrack are inspired by "Monument Valley" from ustwo games.
